To Whom or What Does Your Soul Belong?

Mark 8:36: “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?  Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”

My soul is my most precious possession.  It belongs to me and only me…unless I decide to give it away.  It is then that my soul belongs to whomever or whatever I choose.  Only I can make this eternal decision.  It is said that your soul is made up of three parts: body, soul and spirit.   It is priceless, and along with my heart, it is the greatest commodity that I possess.  There is nothing that I could ever obtain that would be equivalent in value.  Therefore, what I decide to do with it; to whom or what I decide to give it to, is possibly the greatest decision I will ever make.

I’ve heard it said that some “sell their soul to the devil,” for riches or recognition. I believe I’ve met some who have done that very thing.  Perhaps this is what Jesus was talking about when he mentions gaining the whole world, yet forfeiting your soul. Is it really worth it?  Is darkening your very existence worth the price paid for a bit of momentary satisfaction? I think not.

Our problem is that we think with a temporal mindset, when an eternal mindset is required.  After we are gone, our soul will not die.  With this in mind, we need to make preparations for it to be in a safe, life-filled, eternal residence.

My prayer is that my soul (as well as my heart) only be given to the One to whom it truly belongs – Jesus Christ.  May I never be guilty of giving pieces of my soul to anyone or anything else.  May I be ever-mindful of guarding my soul, making sure it remains healthy, integrous and prepared for the One I love.

PRAYER: Lord, I give my soul to You and to You alone, as You are the only One to whom I can truly trust to take care of it.  I give you my soul, as well as my heart, both willingly and gladly.  I entrust both of them to You, as Your Word declares that You will never leave or forsake me.  I pray You make me ever mindful of protecting my heart and soul, and that they will always be pleasing to You. You are my Rock, my Savior, my Healer, and my Defender.  I love you Lord.  Amen.
